Wedding Thoughts

In the middle of July 2018, I told my best gal friend that I was good with being single for the rest of my life and never getting married, if that’s what the Lord’s will was for my life. About two weeks later I realized that I was in love with the guy I’d known forever and had dated before. We’d been through a lot over the last three years and we’d known each other for about a decade. It clearly took me a while to realize it, but once I did….I was caught hook, line, and sinker. I knew he would be the one I spent the rest of my life with.

In February 2019, we started talking seriously about getting married. He was looking for work many states away from where we both lived and the idea of living in two different states until we were married didn’t really appeal to us. (understatement of the century) So we started talking to our parents and running through various scenarios and possibilities with the phrase “The more of our wedding we plan now, the quicker we can make this thing happen.” Before we were even engaged we had colors and the wedding party picked along with the date, my dress, and his suit. We had many details and plans seriously hammered out. We were ready. (second understatement of the century)

I wanted to share with you some thoughts and things that I’ve learned already, and still plenty more to come in this process. It was neat to get to journal some of these things “on paper” and to get to share some of the more personal things of my life with you all.

What I’ve Learned

I am an extreme planner and organizational nerd. Once I get an idea in my head, I want to work it out from start to finish and make the decisions on it.

This is not the attitude to have with planning a wedding.

You have to relax and breathe. Take a step back and remember I’m planning a once in a lifetime event. I don’t get a chance to do this again in a couple decades. I want to enjoy this process and not be so stressed out the entire time. I want to talk with my family members and keep them in the loop. This isn’t just fun for me. It’s fun for them too!

So I kind of wanted to keep a journal of different things I learned throughout the wedding planning process. Partly to share the ideas with others who will be planning a wedding at some point and partly just to share my experiences with you.

  • if you can, use people you know to do/be apart of the catering, photography, music, etc. you are going to pay someone to do all of that anyway, so it’s a great way to be able to help out someone you know. why not let someone you know be apart of your special day in a way that’s a skill set of theirs!
  • slow down and enjoy the process. don’t rush through making all the decisions just so you can have everything squared away. you only get to do this once.
  • include your boyfriend/fiance in the planning process!! He has opinions too and after all, it’s his special day too. (we’ve had a blast talking through different ideas and preferences. he brought a silly and fun side to the table throughout this process. he came up with things that I hadn’t even thought of. mainly coining the term “bridesmen” by accident, which everyone kept saying after the fact by accident. quite humorous)
  • include your family and his family! same as above…they have thoughts and ideas too. since they have gone through this before, they might offer valuable insight. besides, they only get to marry off their kid once…..so they want to enjoy it with you!
  • think outside the box and don’t do what everyone else is doing! if you like what everyone else is doing, then great! if not, don’t do it just because it’s popular. you want to stand out in the crowd of all the other weddings people go to. be unique and special, so people remember your wedding with fondness.
  • people will offer all of their opinions about just about everything. let your mind be a filter….let some of those opinions slide right through while you let some stick in there. don’t be afraid to let suggestions slide through
  • sometimes it’s perfectly fine, and very necessary, to say “this is what I want to do.” not “I think I might want to do it like this.” this is where all the opinions start coming at you and in reality you meant the former and not the latter

It’s been a great experience so far and I can’t wait to see what all else I learn throughout this process! I’ll be sure to keep you all updated on the happenings and occurrences! 🙂

So last month I posted a CHAT question on what time period would you choose to live in. Today I’d like to pose another Chat question, but it’s a little different this time! It’s going to be a series of would you rather questions!

Question 5

Would you rather…

spend two years with your soul mate only to have them die and then never love again OR spend your life with someone nice you settled for?

be unable to move your body every time it rains OR not be able to stop moving when the sun is out?

have no eyebrows OR only one eyebrow?

only wear one color each day OR have to wear seven colors each day?

have all dogs try to attack you when they see you OR all birds attack you when they see you?

sheesh. such random and odd questions!

My Thoughts

If I wouldn’t miss them horribly and terribly every day, I would choose to spend two years with my soul mate, but never love again. If it’s going to be misery of missing them every single day without them in my life, then I’d choose the latter and just settle.

I would choose not be able to move in the rain! I’m a pluviophile and love the rain, so that wouldn’t bother me so much!

If it’s one eyebrow because it’s a unibrow, I would go with no eyebrows. If it’s one eyebrow on one side of my face or the other….I would still choose no eyebrows!! This choice might have something to do with the fact that I hate my eyebrows to start with.

If I can wear seven colors, but they all go together and the outfit matches….I would choose seven colors. If they don’t match, I would choose one color each day. I don’t want to look like a hodge podge of craziness!

I’m going to choose birds to attack me. Most birds are wayy smaller than me and so I feel like I could fight them off, while dogs are bigger and stronger. Having typed that though….I see dogs way less than I see birds. So maybe dogs would be the better choice…
